A lot of complex calculations are required to determine the configuration of the facility, determine whether your current configuration is efficient and whether the facility meets the power requirements of the data center.

How to calculate the power consumption of the server rack
Using the following steps, you can see how we did these calculations and see where the results in the server rack power calculator came from.
1. Define variables
First, you need to know the available square feet of your facility and the power supply (server watts) per server.
You also need to know your facility voltage (VAC), which may be 120V or 240V.
Next, you need to determine the number of racks and the number of servers per rack.
If you don't know any of these variables, you can easily find out by asking your data center staff.
2. Calculate the current of each server
The first and easiest calculation you need to make is the amperage per server, which will help you calculate the total power consumed by each server.
To do this, simply divide the server power supply (server watt) by the facility power supply (VAC).
3. Calculate maximum power per rack (kW)
To start calculating the maximum power per rack, you first need to use the number of racks you have already determined, or you can calculate the maximum number of racks you will use.
This is achieved by dividing the available floor space in the data center by the floor space occupied by each rack, which will depend on your aisle layout.
In a standard 8-pitch layout, this is 16 square feet.

Next, determine the power supply (server watts) for each server, which will be used to calculate the kilowatts for each server.
This number is usually written on the power supply of the server.
Next, divide the server wattage by 1000 to get the number of kilowatts per server.
Once you've figured out the kilowatts per server, you'll multiply it by the number of servers per rack to get the maximum kilowatts per rack for your final data center.
4. Calculate total kilowatts
You've done your homework for this. To calculate the total number of kilowatts required, you need to multiply the number of servers per rack by the number of kilowatts per server. Use this figure to calculate watts per square foot.

Finally, you need to calculate your total watts per square foot.
This is how much electricity a data center consumes per square foot.
To get your total watts per square foot, you need to multiply the total kilowatts you calculated earlier by 1,000. You will then divide that area by the available square feet of the facility (usually the area of raised floor). The result will be your total watts per square foot.
